Not understanding cultural differences can get you in trouble. In this true story a Chinese exchange student in the United States was charged with a sexual crime. His situation was aggravated when his parents flew over from China to visit their son.
The parents following Chinese custom went to visit the girl that had filed the charges in an effort to offer compensation to her so that she would withdraw the criminal charges against their son. This would be something that they would do in China. However in the United States the parents were arrested pursuant to United States law which does not allow contact with the victim in such a manner. The parents were finally released after is was proven that they were simply following their local cultural custom.
